The 2023 Chris Hamilton Cellars Red Blend Napa Valley is 67% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. This wine is deep ruby in color and nearly opaque; fresh, fruity and highly expressive, still, the bouquet falls more on the red fruited side of the spectrum rather than dark. This wine smells like cherry, boysenberry, red plum, blackberry, cassis, dates and black tea leaf. This is a fun wine to smell. The palate tastes like blackberry, Santa Rosa plums, boysenberry, blueberry, currants red licorice and cinnamon stick. The finish is somewhat savory including a note of dried herbs. The oak is complementary here with the fruit clearly the star of the show. Bright, balanced and easy drinking with some complexity, this wine shows particular well at three years post vintage. The gravelly textured tannins are felt more on the front of the palate than the back and linger with a light dusty texture. This is a highly approachable 2023 Napa Valley red wine right out of the gate, unusual in that wines from this vintage tended to need more time in the bottle. 14.0% ABV.
